Course Description

You want to implement a world-class ultrasound program and our virtual training platform empowers your technicians to learn on their terms and pace. But many training platforms can leave students feeling disconnected. Therefore, our community of subject matter experts created the Ultrasound Essentials experience, a bundle of short modules designed to kickstart them on an engaged ultrasound journey.

Ultrasound Essentials One (UE1) is the complete learning package for any condition monitoring technician who strives to become proficient across all elements of ultrasound inspection. Led by virtual instructors, our on-demand modules can be accessed from the comfort of your home, your office, or on-the-go somewhere in between.

In UE1 students tackle three knowledge domains - Foundational, Applications, and Practical – as they gather the skills and confidence necessary to safely address every inspection task.

The Foundational Knowledge domain lays the footings for understanding ultrasound and its significant role as the first line of defense against unplanned downtime, energy waste, and unsustainable practices.

The Applications Knowledge domain connects the dots between foundational knowledge and how condition monitoring technicians use ultrasound to advance reliability of their assets while creating a winning culture.

The Practical Knowledge domain ties foundational and applications to the actual hardware and software technicians use every day in-the-field. Putting knowledge into practice engages and empowers inspectors with the skills they need to apply ultrasound solutions in the field and office.

Course Goals

Our primary goal is to transform condition monitoring technicians into competent, confident inspectors. And since competent inspectors are safe inspectors, you can expect every module to touch on essential habits for working safely.

UE1 sets the standard by upholding the unique and significant position ultrasound represents as the frontline technology for condition monitoring, energy management, quality control, and overall asset reliability.

Foundational Knowledge (UE1-F) - Course Modules

Within the Foundational body of knowledge there are seven modules essential to creating a stable footing from which to build inspector competence.

  1. Intro to Ultrasound Essentials - Foundational

Module Type: video | Duration: 2 minutes | Module ID: UE1-F01

Introduction to Ultrasound Essentials One (Foundational) provides additional insight about what to expect from the Foundational Body of Knowledge.

  2. Ultrasound Basics

Module Type: video | Duration: 47 minutes | Module ID: UE1-F02

Ultrasound Basics covers the essential information necessary to understand basic acoustic principles. Our instructor focuses on wave propagation theory, the relationship between frequency and period, amplitude and energy, and our human perception of sound. Discover the importance of the Inverse Distance Law for airborne ultrasound and acoustical impedance for contact inspections. Finally, tackle the sometimes tricky, but important concepts of how ultrasound is measured using the decibel reference scale.

  3. Sensors

Module Type: video | Duration: 36 minutes | Module ID: UE1-F03

The versatility of ultrasound technology mandates manufacturers to invent a variety of useful and ergonomic sensors for the many inspections encountered. But versatility can be a double edge sword if the wrong sensor is applied to an inspection. The Sensors module equips inspectors with the instincts to choose the right sensor for any task while the instructor explains the differences between airborne and contact, close range, and long distance, and permanent or portable sensors.

  4. Why We Lubricate

Module Type: video | Duration: 22 minutes | Module ID: UE1-F04

“Why we lubricate assets” seems like a simple, straightforward question. But the answer to this question is rarely simple or straightforward and reveals a universal misunderstanding about machinery lubrication in general. Moreover, statistics point to an overwhelming 80% of machinery failures as being directly related to poor lubrication practices. Therefore, establishing the answer to this question is considered a Foundational knowledge building block for every inspector; especially those who will graduate to employ ultrasound for acoustic lubrication of anti-friction bearings.

  5. How Grease Works

Module Type: video | Duration: 33 minutes | Module ID: UE1-F05

Grease is a compound consisting of three components and understanding how they co-exist to create optimally lubricated surfaces forms an essential piece of foundational knowledge. But ultrasound inspectors must grasp this relationship as part of the decision-making process during the grease replenishment task. In this foundational module your virtual instructor explains the composition of grease and how it works to create the best opportunity for survival inside the warzone of a bearing.

  6. FMEA for Lube Programs

Module Type: video | Duration: 30 minutes | Module ID: UE1-F06

FMEA is an acronym that points us in the direction of scientifically discovering which technology is the best FIT for identifying failure modes. It stands for Failure Modes and Effects Analysis. There are many failure modes that occur in bearings but most of them tie back to poor lubrication practices. In this module learn what those bad practices are, how to recognize different failure modes and their effects on the rest of the asset and production, and what every reliability manager must know before deciding which assets to add and how to prioritize them in their database based on criticality.

  7. How Bearings Fail

Module Type: video | Duration: 20 minutes | Module ID: UE1-F07

FMEA (failure modes an effect analysis) is an important tool for all asset reliability; especially rolling element bearings. This short course looks at types of bearing failures, their causes, and how to decipher them as part of a root cause analysis. Understanding how bearings fail helps ultrasound inspectors assess data and anticipate potential downtime.
